Richard Ayoade's Travel Man Ibiza: Where He Went and What He Did in 48 Hours
Discover the Ibiza beyond the superclubs as Richard Ayoade and Jessica Knappett explore the island's hidden gems, unusual experiences and beautiful historic sights.
When you think of Ibiza, what springs to mind? World-famous DJs, glamorous beach clubs, spectacular sunsets and dancing until sunrise?
Well, when Richard Ayoade visited Ibiza for Channel 4's popular travel series Travel Man: 48 Hours in..., he had something rather different in mind.
Joined by comedian and actress Jessica Knappett, Richard set out to discover the more unusual side of the White Isle, squeezing art, culture, food, history and some wonderfully eccentric activities into just 48 hours.
The Ibiza episode, which originally aired on 17 September 2018, demonstrated something we've always loved about the island here at Unique Ibiza Villas: there's so much more to Ibiza than its famous nightlife.
So, where exactly did Richard Ayoade go in Ibiza, what did he get up to, and which of his experiences can you enjoy on your own Ibiza holiday?
Let's find out.
1. Exploring Ibiza in a Classic Citroën 2CV
Forget flashy supercars and chauffeur-driven luxury vehicles. Richard and Jessica chose a rather more characterful way to explore Ibiza: a classic silver Citroën 2CV.
The quirky little French car was a fitting choice for their offbeat adventure around the island.
And while Ibiza is famous for its beach clubs and nightlife, hiring a car is one of the best ways to discover its quieter corners.
Away from the busy resorts, you'll find winding country lanes, traditional whitewashed villages, beautiful countryside and secluded coves that many visitors never get to experience.
Our Ibiza tip: Hire a car during your stay, even if it's just for a couple of days. Some of Ibiza's loveliest beaches, restaurants and villages are best explored at your own pace.
2. Visiting Dalt Vila – Ibiza's UNESCO World Heritage Site
One of the highlights of Richard and Jessica's trip was a visit to Dalt Vila, the magnificent fortified old town overlooking Ibiza Town.
Dalt Vila is one of the island's most important historic attractions and forms part of Ibiza's UNESCO World Heritage listing.
Behind its imposing Renaissance walls, you'll discover a maze of narrow cobbled streets, historic buildings, charming restaurants and spectacular views across the harbour.
At the top stands Ibiza Cathedral, with panoramic views over the town and Mediterranean Sea.
It's a completely different Ibiza from the one you might expect if you've only seen pictures of its famous clubs.
Why we love it: Dalt Vila is particularly magical in the early evening. Wander through the old streets, stop for a drink and enjoy dinner in one of the atmospheric restaurants tucked away within the walls.
It's an absolute must for anyone visiting Ibiza for the first time.
3. Discovering Ibiza's Very Own Stonehenge – Time and Space
Perhaps one of the most surprising stops on Richard Ayoade's Ibiza itinerary was the island's extraordinary outdoor art installation, often nicknamed Ibiza Stonehenge.
Its official name is Time and Space, and it's located near Cala Llentia on Ibiza's west coast.
Created by Australian artist Andrew Rogers, the installation features a striking arrangement of towering stone columns overlooking the Mediterranean.
The artwork has become one of Ibiza's most unusual landmarks, combining contemporary sculpture with the island's dramatic natural scenery.
For visitors expecting nothing but beaches and nightclubs, it's quite a discovery.
The surrounding coastline is beautiful too, with views towards the mysterious island of Es Vedrà.
Our Ibiza tip: Combine a visit to Time and Space with an afternoon exploring Cala Comte or Cala Codolar. It's a lovely way to experience Ibiza's quieter, more artistic side.
4. Experiencing an Exclusive Supper Club with Chef Boris Buono
Food was another important part of Richard and Jessica's Ibiza adventure.
Rather than simply heading to a conventional restaurant, the pair experienced an exclusive supper club hosted by acclaimed chef Boris Buono.
Ibiza has developed a wonderful food scene over the years, with everything from traditional Spanish tapas and seafood restaurants to innovative private dining experiences.
Supper clubs offer something a little different: an intimate atmosphere, carefully prepared dishes and the chance to enjoy food in a more personal setting.
It's precisely this sort of experience that makes Ibiza such an interesting destination for food lovers.
Our Ibiza tip: If you're staying in a private villa, why not arrange your own exclusive dining experience?
A private chef can prepare a beautiful Mediterranean meal for you and your guests, allowing you to enjoy restaurant-quality food without leaving the comfort of your villa.
It's particularly popular for family celebrations, birthdays and special occasions.
5. Trying Flowriding – Surfing Without the Sea
Richard and Jessica also tried their hand at flowriding, an activity that involves riding a continuous artificial wave.
It's a combination of surfing and bodyboarding, with a powerful stream of water creating a wave that riders attempt to balance on.
As you might imagine, it's the sort of activity that lends itself perfectly to Richard Ayoade's dry humour.
For visitors looking for something a little more energetic than lounging beside the pool, Ibiza offers plenty of opportunities to get active.
From paddleboarding and kayaking to jet skiing and boat trips, there are lots of ways to enjoy the island's beautiful waters.
Our Ibiza tip: If you're visiting Ibiza with teenagers or a group of friends, plan a day of water-based activities. It's a great alternative to spending every day on the beach.
6. Enjoying Some Rather Expensive Cocktails
No trip to Ibiza would be complete without sampling a little of the island's glamorous side.
Richard and Jessica's itinerary included some decidedly pricey cocktails, offering a glimpse of Ibiza's more luxurious lifestyle.
The island is famous for its stylish bars, exclusive beach clubs and spectacular sunset venues.
But enjoying a memorable drink in Ibiza doesn't necessarily mean spending a fortune.
One of the simplest pleasures is finding a lovely terrace overlooking the sea and watching the sun slowly disappear below the horizon.
Our Ibiza tip: Head to the west coast for sunset. The areas around Cala Comte and Cala d'Hort offer beautiful views, while San Antonio has some of the island's best-known sunset bars.
Alternatively, enjoy your own sunset cocktails from the terrace of your private Ibiza villa.
7. Relaxing with a Traditional Ibiza Gong Bath
Possibly the most unusual activity on Richard and Jessica's trip was a gong bath.
Despite the name, there's no actual bathing involved.
Instead, participants lie down and relax while large gongs are played, creating resonant sounds and vibrations intended to encourage deep relaxation.
It's an experience closely associated with Ibiza's alternative wellness culture.
Long before Ibiza became internationally famous for electronic dance music, the island attracted artists, free spirits and hippies looking for a different way of life.
That influence remains today, with yoga retreats, meditation sessions, holistic therapies and wellness experiences available across the island.
Richard and Jessica's gong bath was a wonderfully unconventional way to experience this side of Ibiza.
Our Ibiza tip: If you fancy a relaxing holiday, consider arranging a private yoga or wellness session at your villa. It's a lovely way to unwind, especially if you're staying somewhere peaceful in the Ibiza countryside.
What Did Richard Ayoade's Travel Man Ibiza Episode Teach Us?
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from Richard Ayoade's 48 hours in Ibiza is that the island is far more diverse than many people realise.
Yes, Ibiza has some of the world's most famous nightclubs and beach parties.
But it also has centuries of history, fascinating art, excellent restaurants, beautiful natural scenery and a wonderfully laid-back lifestyle.
In just two days, Richard and Jessica managed to experience several completely different sides of the island.
And that's what makes Ibiza such a special holiday destination.
You can spend one day exploring historic Ibiza Town, the next relaxing on a secluded beach, and the following evening enjoying an unforgettable meal beneath the stars.
There really is something for everyone.
